Planning a party for a 6-year-old? Start with what the birthday child enjoys. These ideas help you choose activities, plan breaks and keep the group comfortable.
Choose a party that fits
Children starting primary school often enjoy simple team tasks, a treasure hunt and stop-dance. Around 2.5 hours is a practical starting point. Explain one task at a time, keep waiting turns short and include a quieter activity after the most active game.
Three short games for six-year-olds
Prepare the materials first and demonstrate the first round together.
- Freeze dance, 5 minutes: prepare a speaker and a few favourite songs. Dance while the music plays and freeze when it stops. Nobody is eliminated; everyone joins the next round.
- Find the colours, 10 minutes: put six large coloured cards in visible places around the room. In pairs, children find a colour you name and return. Take turns being the searcher.
- Mirror dance, 5 minutes: work in pairs. One child demonstrates three simple movements and the other copies. Swap roles after a minute and finish with a dance together.
Allow five minutes afterwards for a drink or a quiet break. For preparation, use our home disco checklist.
A simple plan for the afternoon
Welcome the children and give them time to settle in. Follow with one main activity, a break for drinks and cake, then a short game or free play. Agree the collection time with parents. Allow extra time for presents and goodbyes; the schedule is a guide, not a race.
Practical preparation
Ask about allergies when inviting guests. Check how much space is available, keep exits clear and arrange enough adult supervision for the group. For outdoor plans, have an indoor alternative. Let children take a quiet break or watch before joining in.
A DiscoShow at your party
